DGO SPREADSHEET GUIDE

Packing and Shipping Routes: Compare Eligible Options

Compare packing choices and eligible transport services for the same parcel. Use its final contents, dimensions, weight and destination before choosing a route.

YOUR CHECKLIST

Compare routes using the same packed parcel details, then confirm restrictions and the final quote.

01

Set the parcel contents

List every item and quantity. Check whether any item has a route restriction or needs extra protection. Keep fragile goods and any removable packaging in the packing notes. For perfume, keep the selected bottle volume and packaging in the item record, and verify eligibility for the route you are comparing.

02

Choose a packing plan

Decide whether to keep the original box, add protection or combine items. Ask how the chosen packing affects dimensions and weight. Photograph the final parcel if that service is available.

03

Compare billed weight

Check actual weight and packed dimensions. Routes may use volumetric weight when it exceeds actual weight, and calculation factors differ. Use the route estimator with the final measurements.

04

Compare routes on the same basis

Enter the same destination, contents, dimensions and value for each eligible route. Review the quote, estimated delivery range, tracking, insurance and restrictions. Check what happens if the parcel exceeds a route limit.

05

Save the shipment record

Before paying, confirm the address, recipient name, parcel contents and selected route. Save the final quote and tracking number. Recheck the carrier status after handoff.

Define the packed parcel, not an imagined item

A route quotation applies to a parcel with particular contents, dimensions and weight. Boxes, protective fill and consolidated items can alter those measurements. Check what the warehouse will keep or remove and whether the chosen route accepts the goods. Where protection matters, compare packaging choices alongside route price rather than assuming the smallest possible box is automatically best.

Compare routes by the full service

Put the eligible options side by side with their current quote, billed-weight rule, estimated delivery range, tracking and loss or damage terms. Consider what happens if the final dimensions change after packing. Confirm the recipient address and parcel contents before payment. After handoff, save the tracking number and check the first carrier scan so a missing update can be investigated early.

KEEP THIS HANDY

Compare routes using one parcel specification

Contents
List each item and note any restricted, fragile or unusually shaped goods.
Packing
Record whether boxes are kept, protection is added and items are consolidated.
Measurements
Use the final packed length, width, height and actual weight for each quote.
Route
Save the price, delivery range, tracking, protection terms and restrictions for each eligible choice.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Example: protecting a bag and reducing box size

A bag arrives in a large shipping carton. Removing the outer carton might reduce parcel volume, but the bag could need extra protection to maintain its shape. Ask what packaging options are available and compare the final dimensions under each plan. Then compare eligible routes with the same destination and packed measurements. A lower quoted price is useful only if the route accepts the contents and provides the handling you need.

Recheck routes after a packing or eligibility change

The volumetric weight exceeds actual weight

Use the route’s billed-weight rule when comparing cost; the packed dimensions may matter more than the item weight.

A route rejects an item

Do not force it into the declaration. Review another eligible route or change the parcel contents.

The quote changes after packing

Check the measured dimensions and packing record, then compare the revised options before payment.

Questions about packaging and billable weight

Is removing an original box always better?

No. Balance any size saving against protection, product presentation and the packing options available.

Can two routes use different billed weights?

Yes. Check each route’s current calculation and restrictions rather than reusing one route’s figure.

NEXT STEP

Keep the packing plan with the product list

Retain the final contents, dimensions and chosen service together. Any additional item needs to be reflected in the parcel details.
